![]() There other many other options for replication but they basically do the same fundamental task, what you are looking for is the best possible management inferface/tool set to keep an eye on the replication progress. FreeNAS supports rsync and on the Windows side you can use DFS-R. Off the shelf NAS's with the features you are wanting, SSD caching, are actually rather expensive. It doesn't seem like Resilio sync would be supported by NAS drives, but I have no experience with it. Sure the performance between NAS drives may be low, but my upload speed is 2mbps anyway. I found the useful term "Remote Replication" useful for researching this, and it seems there are several solutions for NAS to NAS. To avoid leaving both computers on, I'm thinking of just buying matching off-the-shelf 2-bay NAS drives (link to Amazon), and using Rsync to synchronise them. That said, yes you can use SSDs in FreeNAS, I'm just not sure how as I never tested that setup for myself. SSDs on FreeNAS are purely as read/write cache, they don't contribute to the overall space of your pool like tiering in Storage Spaces. Stay away from Parity spaces as they have terrible write performance. Storage Spaces will allow SSDs as either tiered storage, which moves hot files to the SSDs and cold files to the HDDs, or as a write cache, or both (if you don't specify, all drives get a default 1GB write cache). If you don't want to be giving M$ your money, FreeNAS is good but as I said it really needs better Resilio Sync support for my tastes. Server 2016 will be a great improvement on pretty much everything - but they don't offer upgrades for server OSs so if you can wait for 2016 to come out I would. I am an advocate of Windows Server 2012 R2 with Storage Spaces - that's what both my servers are. I'm not aware of other software that does the same thing. The integration with FreeNAS needs some improvements. It runs on Windows, Linux, and many NAS systems. I recommend having seperate synced folders for source video material and project files. They have a mobile app that allows access to your folders. I've tested the exact scenario you are describing. The good thing about the indexing is that you can use it to seed a synced folder, either right from the start or afterwards, by just quitting the program while you add the seed files. The only pain point is that whenever either server reboots, it takes 5 minutes to index the folders. Resilio Sync (formerly BitTorrent Sync) is a great free program for syncing folders across any connection including the internet, I'm using it to sync about 1.5TB and over 1.5 million files across the internet right now. FreeNAS has good snapshot backup syncing, but no live file syncing that I'm aware of.Ĭrashplan is just for backups, no syncing.
